Distinguishing wasps and bees can be difficult, unlike bees, wasps' bodies are smooth and appear to have no hair. They tend to feed on protein, such as spiders and
insects while bees enjoy nectar and honey. 4,000 species of wasps occur in the United States and over 15,000 occur worldwide. Some species of wasps are very solitary.
These include velvet ants, which are wingless and ant-like, mud daubers, which build their nests out of mud, and digger wasps, that like to dig beetles out of the ground
to eat. Yellowjackets and giant hornets are social wasps that are most likely to live in buildings.
